Spinal Stenosis
WHAT IS IT?
Spinal Stenosis is when our spinal canal narrows, which is the area that houses our nerves and spinal cord. Stenosis, which means narrowing, can cause pressure on our spinal cord or to the nerves that traverse to our muscles. Ultimately, this can result in numbness, pain and weakness throughout the limbs of the upper and lower extremities.
At Uprite Medical, we treat both cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis.
Cervical Stenosis: the narrowing of the spinal canal takes place in the neck. Damage to the spinal cord in this area can lead to symptoms such as weakness, numbness and tingling in your hands and/or arms. In an extreme scenario patients can experience cervical myelopathy. Cervical myelopathy is a disease syndrome consisting of weakness in the hand intrinsics, instability in gait and loss of overall limb coordination.
Lumbar Stenosis: In this condition, the narrowing occurs in the part of the spine located in your lower back. Damage to the spinal cord/nerves in this area can lead to symptoms such as weakness, numbness and tingling in your feet and/or legs. In an extreme scenario, patients can develop neurogenic claudication. Neurogenic Claudication is extreme narrowing of the spinal canal that can lead to bowel and bladder incontinence, pain and weakness while walking long distances.
As we age, the natural wear and tear of daily activities can lead to developing stenosis.

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

- Neck pain that may feel dull or sharp and may be accompanied by swelling or stiffness
- Tingling or numbness in your hands, arms, legs or feet
- Weakness or loss of function in the arm(s) and/or hand(s)
- Loss of coordination
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
- Leg pain that might travel down from your lower back into the buttock and leg(s)
- Tingling, numbness or weakness in the lower back and/or leg(s)
- Loss of coordination/imbalance
- Heaviness in the legs that might lead to cramping
- Pain that worsens when standing for long periods of time, walking and/or walking downhill

It is important to understand that although spinal stenosis tends to progress over time, your symptoms may not necessarily worsen. However, if left untreated puts you at risk of permanent damage.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Before reaching a diagnosis of spinal stenosis, our physicians will perform a thorough physical examination and necessary medical history. Following your initial appointment, you will be sent for imaging, labs, physical or occupational therapy, and consults to other providers to aid in the overall conservative care.
Our physicians will take a deep dive into all aspects of your care to get you better with or without surgery.
When treating spinal stenosis (cervical or lumbar) we put together a treatment plan special for each individual patient. Your treatment plan will be tailored to you, ensuring that you are agreeable and ok moving forward.
Spinal stenosis can potentially cause serious long lasting problems within the nervous system, and waiting to begin treatment can ultimately lead to irreversible damage. It is imperative that you seek medical attention at the early stages of any symptoms.
